KISSIMMEE – Several Clay County athletes earned medals from the AAU Club National Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports held July 15-17 in Kissimmee.

Two Fleming Island High track standouts; Cameron Dill and Spencer Shaw teamed with two Oakleaf High tracksters; Isaiah Gladden and Kyle McDaniels in the 17-18 year old 1600 medley relay; a race of a 1600 meters with runners running an 800, a 400 and two 200s. Dill ran the anchor leg 800 in a scintillating one minute, 55.79 seconds for the second place finish for the four-man crew. Dill got the baton after legs from Shaw (400) and Oakleaf’s Isaiah Gladden (200) and Kyle McDaniels (200). The squad missed out on gold by .09 sec.

Also competing for 1st Coast Track Club, Middleburg High’s Marcus Floyd led the way with three top four finishes in the boys 15-16 age group. Against some of the best high school runners in the country, Floyd captured bronze in the 400-meter dash (48.37) and triple jump (44-7) before closing out the meet with a 4th place in the 200-meter dash (22.14 into headwind).

Dill and incoming Orange Park Junior High’s Mei Chiang were also multiple medal winners. Dill ran 1:55.79 in the 800 to anchor the secnd place 17-18 boys sprint medley relay squad. Dill overcame being tripped, boxed in, and being trapped outside to take 7th in the open 800 (1:59). Chiang placed sixth in the 12 year old girls 3000 (11:44) and 1500 (5:13).

The highest individual finish was Camilla May’s silver medal in the 15-16 girls javelin (89-5). Orange Park Junior High’s Devin Graham took 6th in the 13 year old triple jump (33-9.5) followed closely by incoming Lake Asbury Junior High’s Harrison Robinson (7th in 32-9). Robinson missed out on 100-meter finals by .001 and then tragically dislocated his hip in the 200-meter hurdles. Robinson was seeded to place in the hurdles and long jump. Luckily, no chipping occurred in dislocation and he has a 6-8 week recovery period.

Other medalists were Shawn Floyd in 12-year old discus (8th with 67-9) and Kavon Miller in 11 year old 800 (7th in 2:25). Miller narrowly missed 400 finals (9th 1:02) before breaking his toe and not being able to run in 200 semifinals.

Other interesting notes: Marcus placed third out of lane eight in 400. He PR’d in 200 (21.89 in prelims to have three PRs in a row; two at USATF regional in South Carolina). Spencer Shaw narrowly missed out of 800 finals (.09) with a 7 second PR (2:01). Shaw had 50.71 split in medley and also PR’d in open 400 (51.92). Dill ran well each day (1:55 split, 1:58 in 800 semifinals, 50.10 in 400 semis, 49.06 4x400 relay split, and the 1:59 in finals).
