Sherman “Sam” Katz

Sherman “Sam” Katz, 82, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016 in Jacksonville, FL. Sam was born to Ethyl Fine and Abraham Katz on July 24, 1933 in Tarrytown, NY.

Sam enlisted in the military shortly after high school and served over 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1974.

While serving in the Air Force, Sam accomplished many things. He married his first wife (Joyce) and they had three children, earned both Bachelors and Masters Degrees, and reached the rank of Major. Sam didn’t slow down after retiring from the Air Force. He became an adjunct professor, a business owner, a Clay County Chamber of Commerce Board Member, and was very involved with issues pertaining to citizens with disabilities.

Sam was a warrior. He fought a valiant battle with cancer, heart and lung disease with great courage. One of Sam’s favorite sayings – “growing old is not for cowards”. Sam is predeceased by his mother, father, first wife and infant son.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Vivian; daughter, Sherma; son, Todd (Mary); step-sons, Graham and Roy (Terry).

Sam was loved and his memory will be cherished. Sam’s wish was to be interred at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Services with full military honors will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, July 14, 2016. Please park in Procession Lane # 3.
