The Town of Orange Park celebrated after the Rural Water Association named Bob Brace, town superintendent of utilities, Wastewater Operator of the Year.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reminded residents to consider other ways to honor the loss of a loved one rather than using hot-air balloons due to the risk posed to wildlife.

Clay County Sheriff’s deputies charged Antonio Marquise Morales with attempted first degree murder after a shooting in the parking lot of Club Christopher’s on Wells Road.

10 Years Ago, 2006
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated a murder-suicide at the Bluff House Apartments on Wells Road, west of Orange Park. Police said they believed Derek Taylor shot Jennifer Adair and then shot himself.

A 15-acre wildfire in the area of Lady Bug Lane in Keystone Heights destroyed a boat and resulted in firefighters coming to help from Putnam and Bradford counties, Georges Lake and Theressa to calm the blaze.

Arthur Isaac Ferrell, 36, was killed when his boat struck a manatee sign in the St. Johns River near the Doctors Lake Bridge, just minutes after leaving Whitey’s Fish Camp where he had participated in a weekly bass fishing tournament.

20 Years Ago, 1996
The University of Florida and the Florida Grape Growers Association announced that Aug. 24 would be the date for the inaugural Muscadine Grape Festival to be held on Fleming Island at Tiger Holmes’ Holmes Vineyard on South Shore Drive.

Clay County fire officials said 25 firefighters worked to rescue two-year-old Chelsea Suskala from a fire that trapped her in her parents’ home in the 3000 block of Mitchells Road north of Green Cove Springs.

Keystone Heights Mayor Archie Green presented the Lake Region Kiwanis Club with a key to the city for all of its hands-on work making the city a great place to live.

30 Years Ago, 1986
Green Cove Springs City Council postponed final approval of the Cove subdivision on Houston Street saying more time was needed to review the project’s engineering plans.

Green Cove Springs photographer Rick Bauer teamed up with Middleburg model Kathleen Leisure Burnett to win first place in a statewide Ms. Photogenic of Florida photo contest.

Publix advertised bottom round roast for $1.37 a pound.

40 Years Ago, 1976
Mary Patterson, chair of the Clay County Council for Creative Arts created a roving display of arts and crafts and embarked on a library tour in Keystone Heights, Penney Farms, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs and Orange Park.

The Clay County School Board offered the teacher’s union a 3.9 percent raise saying it was the final offer in this round of contract talks. The hike would bump beginning teacher $328 to $8,728 annually.

The Town of Orange Park placed $50,000 in its 1976-77 budget to build and repair roads in the town.
