GREEN COVE SPRINGS - With junior Spencer LeSage showing top playmaking abilities as the starting quarterback for the Clay High football team, it may sophomore T.K. Kocak as the secret weapon as both signalcallers showed off similiar tendencies during a Blue Devils intrasquad scrimmage Friday night at Clay High School.
“This is end of third week, day 15 with five left, and I think Spencer is doing a good job at quarterback,” said Clay coach Joshua Hoekstra. “The O-Line with fullback Ricky Bernabeu are mostly returners and have continued to get better.”
In the scrimmage, with Hoekstra limiting LeSage on the field and allowing Kocak more time behind center, Kocak showed off some downfield breakaway speed with a 50-plus yard quarterback option that went the distance for a score. LeSage mainly gave off handoffs to backs Wilguens Dorvilus, who caught a long touchdown pass for a score that was nullified by a penalty, and Dallane Brown with both pounding behind the offensive line of Jordan Collins, Mike Carns, Ross Doan and senior Sebastian Nelson, all who fit the Blue Devil mold of big, mobile bashers up front. Add Bernabeu out of the backfield and Clays puts six guys in the defense’s face to contend with while the backfield revs up.
One guy in the backfield that could be a big factor in the offense is wrestler Abbott Taylor.
“He’s not a breaker, but he can be a constant 10 yard guy in the clutch,” said Hoekstra. “He’s strong, in shape and is a just physical kid. He needs to be the hammer with the other two the breakers.”
On the defense, returners Cody Devore and Kenny Johnson impose a good look on the corners with newcomer Jeremy Simms catching Hoekstra’s eye.
“The defensive line is basically brand new with Cody Devore and Kenny Johnson key returners at the ends,” said Hoekstra. “We’ll struggle in the beginning. Jeremy Sims is having a good spring session at nose tackle with Colin Dumas, a big guy, plugging the middle too.”
Linebackers include Mason Adams, the final Adams’ brother with Mike Adams a mainstay now at Bethel University with Clay teammate Jeremy Bilodeaux, and Cain Creery, who though not imposingly big, has a strong nose for the ball. Mike Adams was on the sidelines of Friday’s scrimmage.
One of Clay’s first scores was a long kickoff returned for a score from Derek Holt, who returns from an injury last year and looks like a good candidate to run kicks back.
On the outside, receivers Christian Sweat and Jared Glisson both are six footers with rangy speed and long reaches. Sweat converted a slant for a 40 yard gain last week, but fumbled away a big gain in Friday’s scrimmage.
