Broncos rebound for 11th win

MIDDLEBURG - Middleburg High boys basketball entered the Christmas break with one loss in 11 games record and a bit of confidence that the Bronco aura of non-descript basketball could be changing.

"We had a couple of keys guys out and some guys just not coming to the gym over the break and it happens," said Bronco coach Sean Sweeney, after a disastrous 51-37 loss to Yulee to open the 2024 end-of-the-season.

On the next day, Friday, with a Trinity Christian Academy team bringing an 8-2 season record to the Carrie Prewitt Gymnasium, Sweeney would be remiss if not a bit concerned about his team's reaction to the Yulee blowout.

The reaction was a high-energy first half to a 34-19 lead that finished with an equally tumultuous finish that saw the Broncos hang on for a 62-51 win.

"Oh my God!, Those were the Broncos I knew and coached," chuckled Sweeney. "We were scrappy again and the ball fell for us."

After a hard-battled third quarter that saw Trinity close the gap to 10, Middleburg went to a drive and got free throws attack that amped up the Trinity anxiety.

Middleburg returns to their gym with Bradford on Wed., Jan. 9 with a road trip to Clay (6-4) for a strong county rivalry gut check.

Clay lost a 55-48 game to Nease on Sat., Jan 7.
