CAMP BLANDING - The Middleburg High Broncos’ football team endured the steamy heat of Camp Blanding at last week’s FCA contact camp with some surprisingly strong effort on both sides of the ball.
On offense, with returning quarterback Garrett Blanchett at the helm and running backs Andrew Smith and Kodi Carrington adding a 1-2 punch off tackle, Middleburg was able to move the ball efficiently against teams from Southwest Miami High and even Oakleaf High School.
In one play against Oakleaf, Carrington bashed Knight’s running back KeShawn King in a one-on-one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately, Oakleaf was able to answer with King going right side tackle for a 45 yard scoring run.
On the offensive line, coach Karl Smeltzer likes his size with nearly all five guys across the front, led by Kaleb Strength, pushing above the 250 pound mark.
Fullback Tony Todaro had a nice off-tackle break against Oakleaf.
On defense, Carrington is very obvious the focal point of coach Alan Burnsed’s attack force with defensive tackle Andre Jean-Pierre showing some backfield chaos in both scrimmages. Sophomore Cole LeClair garnered some positive comments from Burnset with his 250 pound frame at defensive end.
Middleburg’s offensive line had a little trouble containing Oakleaf defensive end Mitch Cuthbertson and must make adjustments to keep Blanchett clear in the pocket.
