Carroll seventh, Jackson 45th at golf state tourney

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS – Middleburg High senior Cody Carroll looked to be on his way to a repeat of his Class 2A golf state title with a region best 70 round, but Ponte Vedra High, with the top two finishers on the day, stole the show at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills on November 1.

Carroll, though scorching the fields in the district and region run up to the state tournament, finished tied for seventh with a two-round total of 152 (75-77) on the rugged Mission Inn course.

At the top of the leaderboard, Ponte Vedra had first and second with sophomore Stewart Slayden finishing at 146 (69, 77) and Davis Lee, a junior, just a stroke off at 147 (72, 75). Ponte Vedra won the team title with a 613 cumulative score ahead of American Heritage and Bishop Moore, both with 628 scores. Slayden and Lee tied for 10th in 2016 at 154. American Heritage won the 2016 team title over Ponte Vedra, 604-620.

Bishop Moore’s Ignacio Arcaya, who took Carroll to overtime last year before finishing as the runnerup, finished tied for 11th with a 155 (76, 79) score.

Ponte Vedra also place senior Andrew Farraye in the top 10 with his 152 (76, 76) putting him tied with Carroll.

In the region 2-2A tournament, Carroll was top finisher with a 70 score with Ponte Vedra winning the team title over Bishop Kenny. Slayden and Lee both scored a 73 with sophomore Justin Ortiguera at 72 for the Sharks. Ortiguera fell to 56th at the state tournament with a disastrous 174 (88, 86).

In the girls Class 1A tournament, held Wed., Nov. 8, Jackson, just a freshman, but in her second state tournament, finished at 45th with a two-day total of (+18) 163 (82, 81). Jackson finished 41st in 2016 with a 165 score.

Jackson was an individual state qualifier with a 78 at the region 2-1A tournament.

Winning the team title over Lake Mary Prep (565-589) and the top two finisher spots was First Academy with sophomore Ariel Yu shooting a (-9) 135 (68, 67) to dominate the field and defeat teammate Sophie Guo by three strokes. Yu finished third in 2016 (143). First Academy also placed Emma Zhao at sixth with a 142. Bolles, the region 2-1A team champion, narrowly edged Providence for fifth place, 659-660.

Providence junior Celeste Valinho, the top scorer at the region 2-2A with a 68, was the highest area finisher with a ninth place finish with her 144 (72, 72) score.

In Class 3A, Gulf Coast was team champion with the top five teams within 11 points. Gulf Coast was 615, Ocala Forest 616, Winter Park 617, St. Thomas Aquinas 622 and Boca Raton 626 with Lake Minneola’s Jonathan Yaun the individual champion with a 142 (69, 73).

In Class 3A girls, Lake Mary senior Jenny Kim was top individual with an impressive 138 (72, 66) to win by two strokes over Lake Nona’s Erika Smith. Lake Mary dominated the team scoring with their 588 out-slugging Nicevilles 597.

In Class 2A girls, American Heritage (Plantation) won the team title with a 602 total over Archbishop McCarthy’s 624. Ponte Vedra was third with Nease fourth. Jillian Bourdage, a sophomore at American Heritage, was top scorer with her 144 (70, 74) over Leesburg senior Alyssa Lamoureux and Julia Towne of Eustis, both tied at 145, by one stroke.

In Class 1A, Circle Christian won the boys team title with a 580 total cruising past runnerup St.Stephens at 602. Episcopal was top area finisher at fourth with Providence sixth.
