SOCIETY OF MIXED MEDIA ARTISTS: Hosts an opening reception and awards presentation, which is open to the public, from 3-5 p.m. on Jan. 7 in the Vandroff Art Gallery at the Jewish Community Alliance, located at 8505 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville. The exhibit "Artist Visions” will showcase pieces by many of the award-winning members of the organization. Regular hours at the center are: M-Thurs. 5:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.; Fri. 5:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sat. 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. and Sun. 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. The show will run through Jan. 31.

GARDEN CLUB OF FLEMING ISLAND: Jan. 8 at 10 a.m., at the Fleming Island Public

Library, 1895 Town Center Blvd. Guest speaker Jon Terri, who has worked as a wildlife biologist for local, state and federal agencies and private consulting companies, will discuss marcotting, or air layering, and propagating and caring for bonsai. Info, (904) 264-3055.

BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT: Meets Jan. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Board of County Commissioners Meeting Room, fourth floor, Administration Building, 477 Houston St., Green Cove Springs. The meeting is open to the public.

PRESERVING BLACK CREEK: The Nature Center at Camp Chowenwaw County Park presents guest speaker Genevieve Fletcher of the North Florida Land Trust who will present “Preserving Black Creek,” Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, and includes interactive nature displays along with naturalist hosts to answer questions. COMMEMORATIVE CONCERT: January 14 at 7 p.m., Penney Memorial Church, 4465 Poling Ave, with the Lopez Tabor Duo, comprised of violinist Alfonso Lopez and pianist Michelle Tabor. The concert and parking are free.

PENNEY FARMS HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Meets Jan. 17 at 7 p.m., in Town Hall council chambers, 4100 Clark Ave., Penney Farms. Clamour Theatre presents its porch play, "Passing the Baton." SOCIETY OF MIXED MEDIA ARTISTS: Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Ponte Vedra Cultural Center, 50 Executive Way, Ponte Vedra Beach. Presenter Mike Grecian will be working on a variety of surfaces and substrates, along with what’s new in the world of art supplies. All materials will be included, so just bring yourself.

INVASIVE PLANTS: Dan Dorosheff, a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist, will discuss Invasive Water Plants and Plant management on Jan. 24 at Trinity Episcopal church in Melrose.
