Crafting Social, butterfly release highlight April for Fleming Island Garden Club

FLEMING ISLAND – The Garden Club started April with a crafting social at the library. Members brought in crafts and other items already completed to see what they had done so far; then, we worked on some more.

They assembled bath salts, hand-sewed tiaras onto baseball caps, created beaded swings for our birds in the gardens, and so much more. You can see and buy all this fun stuff at Art in the Garden on May 21 at Club Continental, an event held in cooperation with the Art Guild of Orange Park.

Butterflies were the theme of our April general meeting. Secretary Margaret McDowell gave an interesting presentation all about butterflies, and we were tested at the end to see how much we learned. At the same time, a large portion of the membership was painting decorative garden stones that were sold at the butterfly release on April 27.

Fleming Island Garden Club members will celebrate the end of our year at the May meeting with an end-of-the-year potluck luncheon and a brief business meeting. We will discuss the upcoming garden party at Club Continental from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

If you love art and gardens and would love to spend a few hours at the beautiful Club Continental along the St. Johns River, please join us for an evening of Art in the Garden.

The club had a fabulous food drive at the end of March, collecting 200 pounds of food and $150 in cash, plus toys for Easter and another collection at the end of April with $116 donated and 142 pounds of food. Our food drive members are truly dedicated to the mission of feeding the community and bringing them other necessities. Food Drive Day is also the day we clean up the Fleming Island Library gardens. April gave us one last push to spruce it up before the big Butterfly Release, so garden club members were planting unique plants to attract those pollinators.
