Cruce three-pins to Freedom title: Barrientos takes out No. 1
ORLANDO - Middleburg High's Cheyenne Cruce and Oakleaf's Kailani Barrientos stayed unbeaten in 2023 with wins for titles at the Let Freedom Ring Girls IBT at Freedom High School in Orlando on Saturday.
Cruce, unbeaten for all of last year en route to a state title, continued her streak with three pins to the Freedom title with all three opponents making it past the two-minute marks. Cruce, the top seed at 190, is noted for her quick, first-period pins. Cruce beat fifth seed Day'Jah Clark of Miami Norland with a third-period pin in the final.
Barrientos, who won an individual crown as well as Cruce at last week's Own the Ocean tournament at Ponte Vedra High School, advanced with three pins before battling Gulf High's Callie Alfieria to a 6-3 decision in the final. Barrientos was ranked second to Alfieri in the Kabra state girls' rankings prior to the matchup.
Other placers for Middleburg were Skyla Fisher, sixth at 105; Memphis Moses, fifth at 115; Sarah Walsh, sixth at 120, and newcomer Lauren Hughes, second at 140B.
For Oakleaf, Jazzmine Moore was third at 235 with four wins and two losses. Moore, ranked eighth at 235, lost to Grace Vernine of Admiral Farragut Academy, ranked seventh.
Gloria Paisley, at 190B, was sixth.
