FLEMING ISLAND - All things looked fine for the Fleming Island High girls basketball team as they rifled to a fast-moving 20-8 first quarter lead against district 4-8A rival Creekside on Tues., Dec. 11, but errors mounted and scoring diminished as the visiting Knights pulled out of the Fleming Island High parking lot with a 45-44 win.

The loss ties up the district lineup behind leader Bartram Trail (7-2, 4-0) as Creekside (8-3, 3-1) pushes ahead of Fleming Island (2-2, 2-2) in the first half of the 2018 season. Buchholz and Oakleaf both have 0-3 district slates.

Fleming Island opened the game with a potpourri of steals to layups led by senior Aubry Burke and freshman Avery Cannon who hit two-three pointers in the opener; three for the game.

Up 20-8 after one period, the Fleming Island scoring mechanism stalled to allow Creekside to grab a 27-27 tie seconds before a three pointer from guard Maddie Lippy put the Knights up unceremoniously 30-27 as the buzzer went off for the half. Lippy and sophomore guard Taylor Gardner both led Creekside scoring with 12 points apiece seven three pointers for the duo.

Both teams maintained even par through the third period with Creekside holding 38-34 edge off their two prime shooters hitting three pointers and Fleming Island not able to counter.

In the fourth, Richards nailed a three pointer to 40-37 and Yahiro Guerrero got a layup off a Burke assist to put Fleming Island within a point at 40-39 with 4:49 to go.

A Richard to Burke assist to layup put the game at 40-40 before an assist from Hope Rozier to Guerrero put the Golden Eagles back on top 42-40 with 3:19 to go.

In those final three minutes, Fleming Island committed three critical throwaways as Gardner sacked her final three pointer to fuel the go-ahead surge. Burke would get a steal and layup to tie the game at 44-44, but a questionable foul on Madison Mas in the lane on a charging drive from Creekside’s Emily Mcintosh put two free throws on the floor as Mcintosh hit one to end the game 45-44.

Fleming Island was to host Ribault on Mon., Dec. 17 before hosting the Battle of the Island Christmas Tournament Dec. 20-22.
