Fleming Island High sophomore Ben Johnson, pictured left with mom Tricia Torola Johnson, passed away on Sept. 21 days after a collapsing at school. Johnson, 16, was in a weightlift workout, passed out and was taken to first to Orange Park Medical Center then to Wolfson Children’s Hospital where he died two days later. He was an organ donor. Johnson was a junior varsity baseball and football standout. At his funeral on Sept. 25 at Christ’s Church on Fleming Island, nearly 2,000 friends, family and teammates attended. Teammates Eric Dobson and Scott Kondroik offered tearful remembrances of Johnson’s personality while Fleming Island High junior varsity baseball coach Grant Bigelin spoke of his dedication to becoming a “perfect” pitcher. “Ben would only leave the mound after his last pitch was perfect,” said Bigelin. Johnson was honored at all Clay County high school football games Sept. 22 with a moment of silence, his No. 78 painted on the Ridgeview High field and the Fleming Island junior varsity team arranging in a No. 78 after their Thursday game. Johnson has two younger siblings – Tommy, 13, and Rachel, 11. His parents are Aaron and Tricia Johnson. Johnson was buried at Russell Haven of Rest Cemetery.
