Flowing Waters

I frequently drive on Highway 17 as I move about my part of Clay County, where I live and work. The beauty of the drive is enhanced by several fountains at the entrances to Fleming Island Plantation and Eagle Harbor. There are multiple fountains in the ponds at the entrances to these communities. I often drive by them several times a day. Their beauty always impresses me.
And every time I see these fountains I am reminded of the many times that God’s Word uses water as a metaphor for His great blessings on us.
At one of the feasts, Jesus spoke out, strongly. He said, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” (John 7:38)
It is very clear that Jesus was speaking of the Spirit when He said “living water.” The Spirit, He said, would be given to everyone who would believe in Him.
The fountain of God’s Spirit is available to all. The only restriction on who may receive the water of life is that we must believe! Faith in the Lord Jesus is the essential ingredient.
Jesus has issued an invitation to everyone to come to Him and receive eternal life. His call to you rings loud and clear. “And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.” (Rev. 22:17)
“I will pour water on him that is thirsty,
I will pour floods upon the dry ground;
Open your hearts for the gifts I am bringing;
While ye are seeking Me, I will be found.”
These powerful words, in the poem by Lucy J. Meyer, are a direct promise from the Lord for those who are thirsty for Him.
Come. Fill your cup at the fountain of life. Then you can say with the Psalmist, “My cup overflows.” (Psalm 23)
