GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Ridgeview High’s softball team last year, under coach Roger Harvey, who passed away recently, set a new tone of excitement for the Panther program and, in Clay High’s preseason classic on Saturday, the Lady Panthers showed off some of the same Harvey daring and competitiveness with a strong 3-2 loss to top ranked 8A Bartram Trail High School and a big 11-0 win over 4A Montverde Academy out of Clermont.
Ridgeview surprised district 4-6A with a district semifinal tournament win over Clay High School, a region playoff win over Paxon before a region semifinal loss to Ponte Vedra, who wound up a Final Four team, ended the season.
Against Bartram Trail, with pitcher Brittany Michael knocking out five strikeouts around seven innings of pitching, the Panthers scored the first two runs of the afternoon off an error on a Hannah Foster fly ball and Sarah Anderson sacrifice to set up a passed ball run.
Another error on a grounder from Alyssa Adams preluded a run scoring double from Chloe Chambers, one of last year’s primary hitters for Ridgeview.
In their batting ups in the top of the fourth inning, Bartram Trail was not about to go down easily with a triple to left field setting up a run scoring single and a 2-1 score. Both teams held their ground with defense until Bartram Trail was set up for a score, but fell into a double play from Raven Little at first base who snagged a line drive.
In the top of the seventh, Bartram Trail struck with a double, a walk and a sacrifice to position the go-ahead score on an error to second base. Against Montverde, Ridgeview pitcher Milani Sablan had five strikeouts with Chambers bashing for four runs batted in. Foster added three runs batted in with Little a single run scorer. Montverde had five errors.
Clay, in their preseason action, had a 5-0 lead against Nease in their first game, but fell 9-0 to Montverde Academy on Saturday.
