ST. AUGUSTINE – Ridgeview High volleyball won a convincing third straight district 4-6A title with a resounding 3-0 win over Baker County while, at St. Augustine High, the Middleburg High Lady Broncos fell 3-1 to district 3-7A top seed Ponte Vedra Nease.
“I think our inexperience showed,” said Middleburg High coach Carrie Prewitt. “We didn’t have Kalei (middle hitter Kalei Myer) out there and some new faces on the bench. We can only hope to rebound and play a little smarter in our region playoff game.”
Middleburg, 10-15 overall, travels to power Ocala Vanguard (15-4) for their region opener on Wed, Oct. 25. Vanguard finished as Class 7A runnerup to South Fork High last year and beat Middleburg in round one 3-0.
For Ridgeview (9-9), the route starts at home on Wednesday with Stanton Prep (16-7) coming for the region 1-6A opener for a third year in a row. Bishop Kenny (15-12), the district 3-6A champion, looms as coach Destiny Brightman’s second round opponent.
Against Nease, Middleburg had little answer to the overwhelming height advantage across the net at the Lady Panthers won with scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-10 and 25-15.
In all four games, Middleburg stayed within a point until scores reached 15 where Nease took control and surged ahead for the wins. I
In the Broncos second game win, a 25-22 score, Middleburg took the lead behind strong kills from Mallory Roney and opportunistic defense thwarting the Nease attack. The final two points came from Alaina Collamati as Nease focused their defensive efforts in front of Roney.
In other districts, Fleming Island and Oakleaf both lost in the semifinals of district 3-7A with Bartram Trail upending Fleming Island 3-2 and Buchholz beating Oakleaf 3-1. Buchholz (20-2) beat Bartram Trail (17-7) 3-1 for the district title.
In district 5-6A, Clay lost in their semifinal to Menendez 3-0 with Menendez (19-6) eventually losing 3-1 to Ponte Vedra (20-5) for the district title.
