JACKSONVILLE – In two separate track meets this weekend, two area athletes threw down with fast early season times for a second week in a row with Fleming Island distance runner Andrew Miller crushing the Fleming Island High 3200 record at Flagler Palm Coast High’s East Coast Classic and, closer to home, Orange Park High sprinter Alex Collier blasting the field in the 400 meter dash.

Miller, who holds most of the distance records for Fleming Island, blitzed the Class 4A strong field at Flagler with a nine minute, 25.76 second winning effort in the 3200 to finish nearly 12 seconds up on runnerup Logan Horning of New Smyrna Beach. Miller also had in his wake teammates Evan Fuller in third at 9:50.66 and freshman Kameron Wallizada who established a freshman-best time of 9:55.45 for fifth place. Wallizada’s time is the top freshman split for Florida as well as one of the top in the USA for freshman runners. Miller’s time for 3200 is tops in Class 4A. Miller and Fuller both ran in the Class 4A championship 3200 last year; Miller fourth in 9:37.28, Fuller 10th in 9:53.73.

Two hours north of Miller and friends at Bishop Snyder’s Danny Brown Invite, Orange Park’s Collier was setting up to best a strong field of near-50 second one lappers with Bartram Trail senior Daidren Davis giving Collier, just a sophomore, a run for his money. Collier, who posted a 50.29 last week at Bartram Trail’s Bears Invite, bested Davis with a 49.16 split. Davis finished second at 49.19 with both runners annihilating their seed times. In fifth place, Orange Park had a second frequent flyer in senior Alex Meadows who cruised in at 51.90.

In the final event of the Danny Brown meet, Collier and Meadows teamed with two more sophomores; Sean Dixon and Kadin Elmore to push Raines High in the final with Raines posting a 3:33.17 to the Raiders’ 3:33.98. Oakleaf was third at 3:35.50. Raines was third at the Class 2A championship meet last year with three members from that team running ahead of Orange Park.

In other standout performances at the Flagler meet, sprinter Anfernee McCaskill continued his onslaught of the state’s best sprinters with a win in the 200 and a second in the 100 dashes. McCaskill was just behind St. Augustine’s Dexter Brown in the 100 with an 11.12 behind Brown’s 10.92. In the 200, McCaskill shredded the start to win in 22.39 with Benjamin Barthellemy second in 22.64. Also in the final was Felipe Fernandez, fourth at 23.32.

In shot put, Fleming Island’s Keaundra Noid won with a 33’-5.25” put to win by more than a foot.

At Snyder’s meet, Oakleaf High boys finished third behind Bartram Trail and Raines while the Knights’ girls team was fourth.

Outstanding performances came from Ridgeview’s distance ace Marisa Kortright who bested her season opening 5:45 run last week with a 5:40.29 in the 1600 for seventh in a very fast paced race.

Oakleaf hurdler Ta’Kayla Edwards finished second with a 49.25 split in the 300 hurdles behind Corliss Holland of Raines who won in 47.37. Oakleaf’s girls also stamped out a 4x100 relay win in 50.98.

For Middleburg, high jumper Kaley Petrosky won with less misses with a 5’-5.75” leap for first over Holland of Raines.

For Oakleaf, triple jumper Loren Johnson continued her strong jumps with a winning 37’-11.25” leap for first by more than three feet.

For Clay, discus thrower Kelley Catlett won with a 108’-01” toss.

In the boys 100 meter dash, three Clay County runners finished in the final with Orange Park’s Zykiem Sermonds second to Raines’s Trevon Peterson with an 11.28 split to Peterson’s 11.07. Also in the final were Ridgeview’s Denali Lindo, fourth in 11.47, and Middleburg’s Andrew Thomas, sixth in 11.82.

In the 1600, Orange Park’s John Bear won in 4:34.24 with Oakleaf’s Dylan Nelson sixth and Ridgeview’s Joel Nesi in sixth and seventh with both in at 4:42. Nelson and Nesi both returned for the 3200; second for Nelson in 10:23.22, fourth for Nesi in 10:28.44.
