KISSIMMEE – Bolstered by an undefeated week from Joseph Cusick and a two-loss week from Reginald Brooks, the North Florida Wrestling Academy Red team finished fourth in Pool play at the AAU Scholastic Duals Wrestling National Championships in Kissimmee on June 23-28. NFWA Red advanced to the Silver championship bracket in the small-school Community II division, but lost twice to finish out of the top eight medalwinners.
“I want to put these young kids in front of the tough conditions here; lots of whistles, lots of tough kids and a hectic schedule,” said NFWA coach P.J. Cobbert. “This is a crazy week to keep your head straight. You make it through, you are one up on guys when the championship season rolls in.”
Tops for the Red was Cusick; unbeaten in eight matches at 152 with three pins, two tech falls and one major decision with one 3-0 win. Cusick earned a Gold All-American medal for his unbeaten record.
Two Red wrestlers; Dalton Baysinger at 120 and Reginald Brooks at 285 finished at 7-2 to earn Bronze All-American medals. Baysinger had six pins with Brooks pancaking five opponents; one in 22 seconds.
At 220, Thomas Fredericks finished at 6-3 to earn a Copper All-American medal with three pins with Gannon Janssen at 132 also finishing as a Copper All-American at 6-3 with three pins. Anthony Breeden was a third 6-3 finisher filling in at 182 and 195 with four pins; one in 59 seconds.
Also wrestling were Hunter Herrington at 106 and 113, 3-2; Ryan Holton at 106 and 113, 3-4; Garrett Cole at 126, 4-5; Braden Hill at 138, 5-4; Tanner Speer at 145, 2-7; Gavin Smith at 160, 5-4 and Nickolas Janssen at 170, 4-4.
In the Developmental Division, NFWA White finished with five wins and six losses with Storm Mercado at 132 and Matthew Ross at 138 both finishing with a 10-1 record to earn a Silver All-American medal. Mercado and Ross both had seven pins.
Also wrestling for NFWA Red were Jack Pham at 106, 2-8; Aidan Mayo at 113, 0-10; Brady Dunlap at 120, 0-4; Joshua Sandoval at 126, 6-5; Kenneth Deford at 145, 6-5; Ethan Baur at 152, 6-5; Drew McDaniel at 160, 2-9; Bronson Carter at 170, 7-4; Pierre Toney at 182, 5-5; Zhaquez Griffin at 195, 4-7; Alexander Anzivino at 220, 8-2 and Michael Porchiazzo at 285, 2-9.
For the Oakleaf Spartans, who moved to the Developmental Division after competing in the Community I division last year, All-American status went to Cameron Broughton at 126, 7-2, Bronze All-American with seven pins; Ethan Gustilo at 138/145, 8-1, Silver All-American with eight pins and a 13-12 loss to Thomas Traver of Brawlers Bird Gang; Jordan Mobley at 170, 8-1, Silver All-American with three pins and a win over Brendan Hamilton of the Brawlers Bird Gang and Jacob Moore at 182, 7-2, Bronze All-American with four pins.
“This was a team put together with a few area teams,” said Oakleaf coach Wes Champs. “The guys who earned All-Americans are veterans of this level of competition and were leaders for the younger guys. This was a definite boost to our program.”
Also wrestling for Oakleaf were Egan Gustilo at 106, 2-7; Marcus Mcgee at 113, 1-8; Owen Bronson at 120, 3-6; David Parkes at 132, 5-4; Killian Prentice at 145/138, 2-7; Dustin Tollison at 152, 4-2; Robert McGynn at 160, 0-9; Caleb Dickens at 195, 4-5 and Ryan Delgado at 220/285, 4-5.
