OAKLEAF - District titles in baseball and basketball, a runnerup district finish in one of the toughest lineups in boys soccer and Oakleaf High School’s 10 college scholarship recipients for spring sports was an impressive gathering of athletes bent on being successful at the college level.
From the Oakleaf basketball team, where the top two players were underclassmen with handfuls of college offers filling their mailboxes, three seniors; guard Andrew Harper, center Jayvian Mincey and shooting forward Christian Larsen were all key elements of coach Jason Price’s fast-moving approach to the gae with Jonathan Bryant and Nassir Little both returning front men for the Knights.
Harper, a strong ball handler with a knack for needle-threading passes, will head to Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts, an NCAA Division III school that finished 14-13 last year. The Blazers lost in their New England Collegiate Conference semifinal game before losing a double overtime 127-124 decision to Pine Manor College in the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship tournament.
Mincey, at 6-foot-6, a sinewy center or forward area player with great length, Dominican University in River Forest, IL, also an NCAA Division III level school will be Mincey’s college stop. Mincey may get quick playing time as Dominican finished 2015 at 5-20.
One of the Knights’ most electrifying shooters, Larsen will stay close to home at Florida State College-Jacksonville in the Florida College Systems Athletic Association, a junior college. The Blue Wave finished at 10-17 last year and feature Clay High graduate Philippe Bruce as a returning sophomore next year with a 4.2 points per game average in 26 games played.
For the Oakleaf High girls basketball team, with a dominant regular season that included a district title in a new district 3-7A with powers Fleming Island and Bartram Trail, point guard Destiny Arvinger was the glue to connected the attack for the Lady Knights. Arvinger fast dashes through the paint will go into effect at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, a 28-3 finish last year and 12-0 in FCSAA. Daytona State earned a number two ranking in the final National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) girls basketball poll behind Gulf Coast State (25-1). Daytona State lost in quarterfinals play to Northwest Florida State College, the eventual state runnerup to Gulf Coast. Daytona State advanced to the NJCAA championship tournament in Lubbock, TX, but lost to ASA College in the second round.
In baseball, Oakleaf High’s battles with a strong lineup in district 2-8A with Atlantic Coast and Fleming Island, sharpened the steel for left handed pitcher Will Pillsbury who heads to The Citadel in South Carolina, one of the strongest baseball programs in all of the NCAA. Citadel coach Fred Jordan achieved his 800th career win, all at The Citadel, last year and finished with 814 wins to join 27 active NCAA Division I coaches with 800 career wins. The Bulldogs finished 17-41 last year.
Oakleaf High first baseman, pitcher and slugger Brady Shuey takes his versatility to a new program headed by a new head coach, Luke Harrington, at Coker College in Hartsville, SC. Coker is an NCAA Division II school that also plays in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The Cobras
