Oakleaf, Lake Asbury in football playoff showdown

OAKLEAF – With the remnants of a lightning-ending first half of football that ended at 24-22 with a 70 yard touchdown run the final play of the game, the Oakleaf Junior High Yellow Jackets will host a much-anticipated showdown with the Lake Asbury Junior High Tigers in the Northeast Florida Athletic Conference semifinal playoffs on Tues., Oct. 9 at Oakleaf High School.

Oakeaf, under coach Merlin Smith, won a double overtime battle with Baker County last week, 34-28, to advance to the semifinal with Lake Asbury taking out Green Cove Springs Junior High 30-3 in their final game to determine the four playoff teams.

Baker County and Bradford County will play in the opposite semifinal match with the NEFAC championship game set for Tues., Oct. 16.

In volleyball, the county teams in the semifinals scheduled for Tues., Oct. 9 with finals Thurs., Oct. 11 will be Green Cove Springs vs. Baker County and Lakeside vs. Lake Asbury. The finals will be held at Orange Park Junior High School.

In flag football, the final four lineup will be Oakleaf, Lakeside, Wilkinson and Lake Asbury with Wed., Oct. 10 the semifinal matches and Mon., Oct. 15 the championshp game at Oakleaf High School.
