Julian Bruce (JB) Green
Mr. Julian Bruce (JB) Green, age 89, of Gainesville, formerly of Keystone Heights and Miami, Florida, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Oak Hammock Continuing Care Retirement Community in Gainesville. He was born in Miami, Florida on July 25, 1928 to Marvin J. and Janie Griffis Green.
He was employed as a firefighter with the City of Miami Fire Department for twenty five years, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant, and was made an honorary captain at retirement. In retirement, he moved to Keystone Heights, FL with his wife to live in a home that he designed and largely built, and pursued his love of gardening, fishing, and hunting.
He moved to Oak Hammock in Gainesville in 2004, where he was the first chair of Oak Hammock’s community gardens, and also an active member of the Woodworker’s group. He was happiest when outdoors, or telling stories about the fire department, his encyclopedic knowledge of Florida history, particularly the Miami area he grew up in and the communities around Starke, Florida, home of his mother’s extensive family.
He joked with almost everyone he met, and continued to make jokes even through his final illness. Mr. Green was preceded in death by his parents and his 8 siblings. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy; his son Bruce (Sheri) of Wacissa, FL; his daughter Kathleen (Winston), of Cary, NC; his grandsons, John (Ita) of Largo, FL, Adrian, and Wade of Durham, NC, and great grandson, John, also of Largo, FL. A memorial service and reception will be held June 2, 2018 at Oak Hammock in the Oak Room at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Haven Hospice of Gainesville, or the Miami Firefighters Benevolent Association.
