Please consider volunteering, getting pets from rescue facilities

Posted

One-third of all dogs and cats in the United States are reported missing in their lifetime. When these animals get lost, they are often taken to vets and checked for a microchip. The pet could be surrendered to a nearby rescue facility without a microchip.

This letter is about acknowledging the rescuers in our local area who help pets in need every day. I don’t believe that rescue organizations get the recognition and donations they deserve.

Many animals in need of a caring home have been lost or rehomed. Animals such as dogs and cats have been a welcome addition to homes. With the increase in visibility and donations to rescues, more pets can go to loving homes. That will have lasting benefits on the care rescue organizations can give the pets.

I believe if more people would volunteer at animal shelters and donate to their causes, it would ultimately help pets in need. Some shelters cannot keep up with all the animals in their care. I think people should also adopt shelter animals that are right for them. Animals that are surrendered are usually mixed breeds, and mixed breeds are normally healthier than the pets that are bred.

In conclusion, donate, volunteer, or adopt at a shelter or rescue because animals deserve loving and happy homes.
