CCSO investigating Lake Asbury area shooting
LAKE ASBURY – Early in the evening on Oct. 2, there was a shooting incident in the Arava subdivision in Lake Asbury.
One person was struck with what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury, according to a statement from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant who responded to the scene.
The others involved fled the scene and detectives are actively working to find leads.
The preliminary investigation has led to this being an isolated incident and we do not believe there is a threat to the community at this time, the statement stated.

Orange Park Police find body in river
ORANGE PARK – At 9:42 a.m. the morning of Oct. 2, officers of the Orange Park Police Department responded to the 600 block of River Road after receiving a call about a possible deceased person in the St. Johns River.
Officers and firefighters from the Orange Park Fire Department removed the body of a black female from the water, according to a press release.
Public Information Officer Cody Monroe said the woman’s body was transported to the Duval County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be completed.
Police are still working to identify the woman.

Jax woman charged with vehicle theft
MIDDLEBURG – A Jacksonville woman faces charges for allegedly stealing a vehicle in Clay County.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office extradited Kristine Marie Marshall, 34, from the Duval County Pre-Trial Detention Center on Oct. 1 and booked her on one charge of Grand Theft Auto.
According to the arrest warrant, on Sept. 4 Marshall got into an argument with the owner of the vehicle at a residence on Reed Street in Middleburg over not having a ride to the Florida Department of Children and Families. According to the warrant, Marshall had previously ridden in the vehicle but did not have permission to drive it.
Police said Marshall then got into the vehicle and drove away. The vehicle was recovered Sept. 5 on the side of Philips Highway in Jacksonville after being abandoned.
At press time, Marshall remained in jail where her bond is set at $10,003

Keystone man facing illegal dumping charge
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Keystone Heights man faces felony charges after allegedly dumping 1,200 pounds of waste in the middle of a road.
James Reden Wooten, 58, turned himself in to the Clay County Sheriff’s office on Oct. 1 after an arrest warrant was issued after he allegedly illegally the waste in the middle of the road on the 5900 block of Villanueva Drive.
According to the arrest warrant, an environmental investigator was called out in response to reports of illegal dumping.
Upon inspection, the investigator was led to the home of Wooten and, after discussing the allegations with the officer, Wooten agreed to come out to the site of the dumping. After giving police a written sworn statement, Wooten cleaned up the waste and transported it to Rosemary Hill Solid Waste Facility in Green Cove Springs where it was verified and weighed.
At press time, Wooten is free on bond.

Shots fired at apartment complex ends in arrest

ORANGE PARK – A New York City man faces a felony charge after he allegedly fired a gun in a wooded area on the 1700 block of Wells Road.
Leonardo Miguel Zelaya, 19, turned himself into the Clay County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 1 on one count of discharging a firearm in a residential area.
According to the warrant, on May 21, Zelaya and an acquaintance were at the Holly Cove Apartments when they went to a wooded area behind the complex.
Zelaya allegedly pulled out a pistol that he concealed in his waistband and fired several shots. In the warrant, police raised concerns that one of the shots struck a tree that was about 50 yards from the apartment complex and also in the direction of Interstate 295.
A witness confronted the two and Zelaya ran further into the woods and hid the gun under leaves. Deputies found Zelaya hiding on a creek embankment.
At press time, Zelaya is free on bond.

Flagler man dies in Clay crash
PUTNAM HALL – A Palm Coast resident was killed in a crash on State Road 100 at County Road 219.
Florida Highway Patrol said that George G. Pacheco, 45, was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima heading westbound on State Road 100 when the crash occurred Sept. 27 at 9:48 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 219 near Putnam Hall.
FHP said Pacheco traveled over the single lane line while going around a curve when he collided in the eastbound lane with a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Jeffrey Finch, 47, of Grandin.
Pacheco was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both vehicles came to final rest near the area of collision. Rescue workers transported Finch to UF Health hospital in Gainesville where he was treated for minor injuries.

Clay residents involved in Jax fatality crash

JACKSONVILLE – A Jacksonville resident died, and two Middleburg residents were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 295, south of Interstate 10 on Sept. 26 at 6:35 p.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Michael Paul Peterson, 36, of Jacksonville died after he was ejected from the vehicle he was a passenger in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by David Riley, 53, of Middleburg. Riley was ejected from the vehicle as well and was last listed in serious condition at UF Health hospital in Jacksonville.
FHP said Riley was driving southbound on I-295 when he lost control of the vehicle, collided with a guardrail and overturned. Another passenger in Riley’s vehicle, Brian Brown, 44, also of Middleburg, was last listed in serious condition at UF Health.
FHP said debris from Riley’s Silverado struck a northbound 2018 Honda CR-V driven by Catherine Golisch, 51, of Fleming Island, who was not injured in the crash. The Honda came to rest in the median facing north, while Riley’s truck was facing east in the median.
FHP said Peterson was not wearing a seatbelt, but Golisch was.
