JACKSONVILLE - Orange Park masters runner Holly Sanford had three goals for her Saturday morning race; the annual Captain Chuck Cornett Navy Run 10K race held at NASJAX.

“I wanted to get my slot in the River Run 15K first, maybe win the race and also to see if last night’s dinner would be a problem,” said Sanford, 44, referring to an Indian cuisine on her anniversary night on Friday.

Sanford used a final 80 meter kick to outrun Sidney Dent, 33, of Orange Park, whom Sanford had just passed at about the 150 to go mark. Both were behind female winner Lucrezia Gowdy, just 12, but a standout runner at Assumption Middle School in Jacksonville.

“I pushed had to try and get to the girl up front, but didn’t know the other one was right behind me,” said Sanford. “I made my goal of getting a River Run slot and I also survived the night’s dinner.”

With 400 people joining Sanford in the celebration of former Orange Park U.S.Naval Aviator Captain Chuck Cornett, who also created the Florida Striders Running Club in Clay County, the 10K event was won by Sterling Smith, 25, in 38:29 with Gowdy winning the female end in 42:53. Gowdy is the 2018 Katie Caples Cross Country middle school champion and the Jacksonville Track Club’s youth runner of the year.

Runnerups were Andre Brooks, 27, in 38:46 for the men and Sanford in 44:16 for the women. Sanford was top masters finisher with Errol Daniels, 40, top male masters in 40:31 for fifth overall.
