Shaw, Wendell

Wendell Averill Shaw of Fleming Island, FL, passed away on March 4, 2024.

Born to Averill Shaw and Kathleen G. Phair on May 24, 1938, in Mars Hill, Maine, he graduated from high school in Aroostook County. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Jones College and a master’s degree from North Florida Theological Seminary.

Wendell married Judy G. Cross in 1959, and together they had three children before divorcing in 1985. He was married to Carol Beck from 1993 to 2004.

Wendell served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963 before going on to serve as pastor of Orange Park Assembly of God from 1965 to 1983. He pastored Bethel Assembly of God in Lawton, OK, from 1991 to 1993 before returning to Clay County where he started Christian Faith Center. He was pastor at Christian Faith Center from 1993 until 2013.

Quick witted, he had a wonderful sense of humor and laughed often. Pastor Shaw was committed to serving the Lord and people for as long as he was able. In 2015, at age 77, Wendell began a ministry of Prayer Walking. He could be seen several days a week walking around neighborhoods of Clay County wearing a safety vest with “PRAYER WALKER” in large print across his back. He continued doing this until 2022. His purpose was to bring the households of Clay County before the Lord; that they may know Him.

Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, Averill Shaw, Kathleen (Phair) Slipp, and his brother, Wallace Shaw. He is survived by stepsister, Sandra Maynard; children, Valerie G. Mills, Joel A. and Rebecca (Bock) Shaw, and Steven K. and Sarah (Gerdel) Shaw; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 10 am, at Christian Faith Center in Middleburg, FL. There will be a viewing on Sunday, March 10, 2024 from 3 to 4 pm in the Broadus-Raines Chapel in Green Cove Springs, FL. He will be laid to rest at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.

Wendell was generous throughout his life to many missionaries, local charities and international missions organizations. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please donate to Go-To Nations or to a local Christian organization that helps the poor.
