The Florida Charter School Appeal Commission voted 6-0 to approve the application for Orange Park Performing Arts Academy after being denied by the Clay County School Board at its regular January meeting. The school district decided not to appeal the Commission’s decision.

On a 4-1 vote, the Green Cove Springs City Council agreed to borrow $3.1 million to fund its new city police department headquarters.

Walmart announced it was going to open one of its Neighborhood Market stores at the corner of College Drive and County Road 220 in the old Food Lion location.

Citizens for Term Limits and Accountability vowed to place an issue on the November ballot to reduce the county commission from 7 to 5 members after the board of county commissioners denied a request to certify their petitions due to the title of the ballot measure being too long.

Green Cove Springs native Augusta Fells Savage was officially inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

Keystone Heights City Council re-elected Tony Brown to serve as vice mayor who would serve as mayor in the absence of Mayor Mary Lou Hildreth.

It took several officers at the Clay County Jail to detain and control Bernard Winn of Jacksonville after he struck corrections officer Veronica Smith who was tasked with conducting a cell search. Smith sprayed Winn with pepper spray after he tried to incite a full-scale riot among inmates.

Members of the Animal Rights Federation picketed outside Orange Park Kennel Club with signs after the activist group learned an injured greyhound had been forced to race.

The Fourth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission sought applications to fill a County Court judgeship in the aftermath of the retirement announcement by Judge June Blackburn.

Nancy Heiskell, a child development and parenting teacher at Orange Park High, was named the Florida Home Economics Association’s Teacher of the Year.

Orange Park Police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated a robbery at the Florida Federal Savings and Loan Association at 1345 Park Ave. after a man, believed to be in his early 40s, entered the bank and said he had a bomb in a satchel he was carrying.

Members of the both the St. Johns County and Clay County Boards of Commissioners agreed to continue to cooperate over a proposed outer beltway that would run from I-10 to I-95 through Clay to St. Johns.

Sam Saunders served as temporary chairman of a committee set up to study the feasibility of creating a Clay County Agricultural Fair. Members would include members from the Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, Clay County Chamber of Commerce and County Agent Jesse Godbold, who called the meeting along with Saunders.

Clay Electric Cooperative presented the Clay Board of County Commissioners with a proposal to establish a program called “load management” to promote energy conservation.

The Green Cove Springs City Commission took up a proposal to establish a summer competitive swim team for children ages 7 to 18.
