Developer Mark McGuigan told the Penney Farms Town Council he planned to build 50 homes on a 70-acre horse farm on Paso Fino Road, north of State Road 16, but would not need to tie in to city water and sewer.

Clay County leaders mourned the passing of Orien Pass, who served 12 years as executive director of the Clay County Development Authority, after he died in a swimming accident on the Island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

Orange Park Medical Center donated $30,000 to St. Johns River State College to support its new Bachelor of Nursing program.

Clay County School Superintendent Ben Wortham announced the possibility of cutting as many as 115 positions as the district stood to lose $10 million in state funding cuts.

The Florida Department of Transportation began work on a $6.1 million project to add two new spans to the North Fork of the Black Creek bridge on Blanding Boulevard.

Along with help from the Justice
Coalition, May Martinez of Orange Park, travelled to Tennessee to retrieve the skull of her daughter, Colleen Slemmer, who was captured, tortured and beaten to death in January 1995 on the campus of the University of Tennessee.

Clay County Manager Bob Wilson and Public Safety Director Jim Corbin said their computer and 911 systems were close to being ready for Y2K, the belief that computer systems would fail at the strike of midnight Dec. 31, 1999 to ring in the year 2000.

Carlisle Container Corp. in Green Cove Springs announced it was ceasing local operations and would be laying off 160 workers.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved reconstruction of the pier at Knights’ Boat Ramp County Park at the Black Creek Bridge on U.S. Highway 17 along with adding a new baffle breakwater system along the pier.

30 Years ago, 1989

Thirty-three-year-old Julia Simpson went on trial for second-degree murder for the alleged shooting death of her husband Dale Simpson whom, authorities said, she shot three times in the chest with a .38-caliber revolver.

Gov. Bob Martinez appointed Clay County Sheriff Dalton Bray to the Florida Criminal Justice Information Systems Council.

Orange Park Town Council voted 4-1, with Vice Mayor Ron Raymond voting no, to allow residents to vote on what month to hold town council elections, March or September, during the primary election.

40 years ago, 1979
Orange Park officials were gearing up for a tour and celebration to mark the town’s 100th birthday.

National nonprofit Junior Achievement trained business leaders and Clay County School District eighth and ninth grade teachers on Project Business, which would soon be rolled out in local classrooms.

An ensemble of the Up With People performing group gave a brief performance at the Orange Park Mall to entice shoppers to head to Jacksonville to see their full show.
