Green Cove Springs City Council approved a plan submitted by Tod and Michelle Sweatland to remodel the old Ronnie Robinson Chrysler-Jeep dealership building and transform it into law offices.

Green Cove Springs council member Deborah Ricks announced she would retire from the council on Jan. 2, 2013. Under state law, she had to retire from all public positions – including her job at the Clay County Clerk of Court Office – in order to collect a state pension.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated skeletal remains found in a drainage ditch off Wells Road in Orange Park. A 15-year-old boy who had gone fishing spotted the remains.

After three hours of vocal support and opposition, Orange Park Town Council voted 3-2 to allow a poker room at Orange Park Kennel Club. Opponents said it would lead to crime, while supporters touted high-wage jobs.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dreshawn Royall Mays, 14, of Jacksonville for possession of a .223-caliber semi-automatic assault rifle with one bullet in the chamber. Police recovered a 16-bullet clip from the vehicle he was in at DeBarry Avenue and Wells Road.

A federal bankruptcy court in Jacksonville turned over control of the Ravines Golf Resort to trustee Alexander Smith, a Jacksonville attorney.

20 years ago, 1997
Actor Peter Fonda and movie director Victor Nunez signed autographs at a gala to officially open the AMC24 movie theater at Orange Park Mall. The theater also hosted a premiere of the film “Ulee’s Gold,” in which Fonda played the lead role.

John S. Driggers was named executive director of Life Care Center off Wells Road in Orange Park.

The Green Cove Springs City Council voted to reauthorize $20,000 of unused contractual services funds and place the money in a fund earmarked for core district redevelopment.

30 years ago, 1987
On a 3-2 vote, the Clay County School Board voted in a $900 impact fee on each new home built locally. The board recommended the Board of County Commissioners approve the fee that will be used to pay for new schools as well as school repairs.

The Florida Department of Revenue told Clay County it would not collect a two-cents a gallon gas tax because the county ordinance allowing the tax was not approved before July 1, the start of the fiscal year.

The Clay County School District began classes with a record enrollment of 20,265 students and a new elementary school. Lake Asbury Elementary opened to serve grades five and six.

40 years ago, 1977

Three portable classrooms on Gano Avenue opened their doors to serve 255 students at St. Johns River Community College’s first-ever Orange Park campus.

Dick Post, head of the Clay County Planning Department, announced a search for 18 residents to serve on a Citizens Advisory Committee to give input to help develop the county’s state-mandated comprehensive plan.

Rep. Frank Williams(D-Starke) said he would like to see the Doctors Inlet Prison shut down and its 75 acres become home to the permanent Orange Park Campus of St. Johns River Community College.
