JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Jaguars defense stole three passes from MVP quarterback Russell Wilson to propel the Jaguars to a 30-24 quasi-upset of the former Super Bowl champions at Everbank Field on Sunday. The win, coupled with a Tennessee Titan loss to Arizona put the Jaguars in sole possession of first place in the AFC South.
Quasi-upset because both teams entered the game at 8-4, but upset nonetheless because no one believed that the Jaguars would be able to go toe-to-toe with seasoned, yet injury-riddled Seahawks lineup. Oh, we was wrong.
After a dismal 3-0 Jacksonville halftime lead saved by an end zone interception from Jalen Ramsey and a second pick from A.J. Bouye before the halftime break, the Jaguars unloaded on the Seahawks for 21 points behind an 18 yard scoring pass from quarterback Blake Bortles to wideout Dede Westbrook. Bortles finished with 268 yards passing with two scores and no touchdowns.
“During the week, our defensive backs do drills that make them go after balls,” said Marrone. “At the end of the week, we make the throws tougher and they put on their own highlight show going after them. They all have great hands when they go for a ball.”
Down 10-0 and the 65,000 fans awaiting a Wilson-led comeback surge, the Seahawks answered with a field goal, picked up a kickoff fumble and Wilson hit a 26 yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin to quickly tie the game.
After the kickoff, Bortles connected with a breaking Keelan Cole behind the Seattle secondary for a 75 yard touchdown bomb that ignited the Jaguar sideline.
Jacksonville pounded for another touchdown with running back Leonard Fournette punching in from one yard out after a 72 yard punt return from Jaydon Mickens got to the one yard line.
“He’s (Fournette) been coming off a nagging injury,” said Marrone. “It’s important for us that he can run like he can.”
Bouye intercepted Wilson a second time late in the third period on an overthrown ball to Baldwin.
In the fourth, now up 27-10, the Jaguars defense got stung with a Wilson to Paul Richardson scoring pass of 61 yards and a 74 yard scoring pass to Tyler Lockett to close the gap.
Jacksonville has a final home game with the Houston Texans visiting Everbank Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Jaguars finish with games at San Francisco and Tennessee.
