1A-Hawthorne (4-0) at 4A-Keystone Heights (2-2) HHS 33, KHHS 20)

Hawthorne is fast and furious with scores of 69-0, 60-0, 51-19 and 60-0 and near 900 passing yards in four games and two receivers with 6TDs each; one a 5’-5” speedster. Can the Indians defense slow down the offense? Keystone Heights coach Chuck Dickinson knows how to run the ball to keep the offense on the field. If Channell and Friedlin hold the ball all night, this could be a very big upset. Offensive line play; Dodd, Baxter and Hughes need to play best game. Carter Semione will have big night.

District 3-7A: Oakleaf (3-1, 1-0) at Fleming Island (3-1, 0-1) (OHS 26, FIHS 23)

On paper, this is a close game. On the field, depends on which Fleming Island defense shows up. Fleming Island had critical second half overtime loss to Buchholz two weeks ago and needs this one to stay in the playoff hunt. Oakleaf won a track meet with Bartram Trail then went toe-to-toe with Clay last week and won the fourth quarter. Frank Garis has the Knights smelling a district title. Walter Simmons, QB, is real deal.

District 5-5A: Ridgeview (3-2, 0-1) at

Orange Park (4-1, 1-0) (RHS 28, OPHS 27)

Raiders are rolling and Macpherson likes district titles. Knocking off Clay was huge. Losing to Palatka was huge for Ridgeview. Huff wants the title and has most of his weapons back. Raiders secondary is as athletic as any in town.

District 4-6A: Middleburg (1-4, 1-0) at Ed White (2-3, 1-0) (White 23, MHS 12)

Middleburg made mistakes against Orange Park, but played hard. White has Kevin Sullivan, a wily veteran, as coach and that makes for an interesting matchup of wits. White has played some pretty good teams and will be revved thinking Middleburg is a gimme.

District 5-5A: Clay (1-4, 0-1) at

Menendez (4-1, 0-1) (CHS 44, Menendez 16)

Everyone thought Oakleaf would be a blowout win over Clay, but Blue Devils put a show of force against Knights. Menendez started out as everyone’s worst nightmare, then lost to Baker County to give Hoekstra a slim look at the playoffs. Hoekstra will take that slim look and make it work. Cedrick Brown was monster against Oakleaf until cramps pulled him. Freshman La’Quarius Ray is legit hammer in second half. Clay’s “little” linebackers showed up against Oakleaf. Menendez RB Ty Edwards is a bigger Keshawn King. That could be a problem. Baker County slowed him down to 107 yards; Ponte Vedra held him to 67. The other guy, Kenny Logan, is almost as good, but smaller. Will be up to Rodney Keller to corral them.

SJCDS (2-2, 1-1) at Halifax Academy (2-3, 0-0) (SJCDS 26, Halifax 13)

Common opponent is Florida Deaf; 40-0 for Halifax, 47-6 for SJCDS. This is an even contest. Take Chipoletti as the edge. Max Monroe and Brady Walden are automatic. Mighty Max Arnold is legit beast on the edge. Halifax has a big pass game as well so secondary play critical.

First round of district matchups: Clay beats Menendez after tough dinger from Oakleaf, Ridgeview exacts playoff hopes on Raiders. Chipoletti has this Spartan thing figured out. Oakleaf run game punches Fleming Island out.

Game of the Week: Ridgeview stays alive in seesaw battle with Raiders.
