Fleming Island High two-time state triple jump champion Mikayla Shavers and Oakleaf Junior High seventh grader track sprinter Bobbie Gibbs both came home with national titles after competing last week at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia.
Shavers, who set a Florida triple jump record at the Class 3A championships at University of North Florida with a 42-foot-11.5 jump, leaped 42-1.75 inches to win her event in Philadelphia by four inches against Randolph High (New Jersey) senior Seannah Parsons, who finished with a 42-6 3/4 leap as the runner-up. Parsons, who was second at the New Jersey state championships and has represented Trinidad and Tobago, with a previous best of 43-0.5.
Third place went to Deer Park High (New York) senior Kayla Beaumont at 41-2.25.
In the 100 and 200 sprints, Gibbs, a runner for the Falcon Elite Track Club in Jacksonville, won both events in a field chock full of eighth graders. He won the 100 in 10.76 seconds against Raymond Queen IV of the Falcon Elite TC (Maryland) who was in at 10.95. Third place was 10.99 from Camden Lockwood of EPIC Elite TC (Texas).
Gibbs also won the 200 in dominating fashion with a split of 21.82 ahead of Darius Bolling of Prospect Park Youth Running (New York) in 22.28. Third place went to Austin Coversion of West Georgia Elite in 22.58.
Gibbs, who also runs with the North Florida Elite Track Club, has been on a tear nationally with a recent 100 win at the Under Armour Track and Field National at IMG Academy in Bradenton on May 29-31 with a 10.65 win and a 21.69 win in the 200.
In Oregon, Fleming Island High sent distance runners Brooke Reynolds to the 800 and the Golden Eagles 4 x 800 team of Luke Janke, Andrew Lou, JP Strombeck and Marcos Serrano to the University of Oregon's Hayward Field for the NIKE Outdoor Nationals and U20 Track and Field Championships.
Reynolds, in the 800, finished 90th with a 2:21.56 split. Sophia Peterson of Texas won in 2:11.94.
In the 4 x 800, Fleming Island finished 22nd at 8:03.83. The winning time of 7:33.68 was set by Bradenton's IMG Elite. Fleming Island's 4 x 800 finished third in 3A state track meet last month with a 7:53.14 split.
