30 OPMC residents earn Graduate Medical Education degrees

ORANGE PARK – Orange Park Medical Center celebrated the graduation of 30 residents from four of their Graduate Medical Education programs. Friends, family, instructors and administrators attended the graduation ceremony at Timuquana Country Club.

The exiting graduates will be followed by an incoming class of 57 residents and fellows that will bring the hospital’s graduate medical education program to a total of 101 physicians. The training programs at Orange Park Medical Center vary in length from one-to-four years and include family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, psychiatry, cardiology, emergency medicine, hospice and palliative medicine and a transitional year program which focuses on subspecialties.

“Orange Park Medical Center is a growing academic center,” said Dr. Joseph Parra, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer. “As the largest hospital in Clay County it’s our responsibility to contribute to the future of healthcare in our community.”

Orange Park Medical Center’s parent company HCA Healthcare has the largest residency program in the country and is a leader in resident education across the U.S.

Dr. Parra said, not only does having a graduate medical education program elevate the care provided at Orange Park Medical Center but it gets ahead of the physician shortage that is on the rise.

On average, 70 percent of residents stay within the community of their residency program. Orange Park Medical Center will continue to recruit skilled physicians to the Clay County area to assist in the long term need.
