FLEMING ISLAND - With a first in school history district basketball title trophy, Fleming Island High basketball senior guard Sebastian Astor garnered a nomination on the prestigious Florida Dairy Farmers Class 6A Player of the Year list.
Astor, who was the wing man for Gianfranco Grafals last year in the Golden Eagles historic Final Four finish, became the prime time ballhandler for coach Traavis Chandler after Grafals’ graduation.
Astor finished with a 15.6 points per game average with 3.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game to lead the Golden Eagles to a 20-9 record with string of high-scoring team points in the last six games putting the Golden Eagles into the region semifinals where they lost a thrilling 71-64 game to Daytona Beach Mainland. Fleming Island beat Tate High, 79-67, in the region opener. Mainland eventually lost to Columbia High in the region finals, 70-65.
Astor’s counterplayer on the Mainland team, Jordan Sears, was also on the Class 6A Dairy Farmers’ Player of Year nominees list as well as Mainland coach Joe Giddens and Columbia coach Steve Faulkner, 28-3, Final Four finisher. Astor’s best games were 26 points against Melbourne, a 65-60 loss, and 24 points against Palatka, a 73-71 win.
Astor had a best of five three pointers in Golden Eagles overtime win over First Coast for the district 3-6A championship.
Against Oakleaf, Astor dished for a season-best 10 assists. Other area players included Williams Spriggs, senior point guard at Mandarin (7A); Joshua Bailen, Nease point guard (7A); Alex Fudge, junior center at Robert E. Lee (5A); Stephen Jenkins, coach at Lee; Isaiah Adams, senior guard at Paxon (4A); Deebo Coleman, junior guard at West Nassau (4A); Toby Frazier, coach at Paxon (4A); Jerry Buckley, coach at Bishop Kenny (4A); Logan West, senior forward at Andrew Jackson (3A) and James Collins, coach at Andrew Jackson (3A).
