BARTRAM TRAIL – Every time the Fleming Island boys basketball team enters a gym they know they have a bullseye on their backs.

Friday night at Bartram Trail the bullseye got a little bigger.

“We need to be ready to play every night,” said Golden Eagle head coach Traavis Chandler. “We know that everyone looks at our game on the schedule as a big one.”

Junior point guard Sebastian Astor scored a game high 22 points and Jordan Miles scored 21 points to power Fleming Island to a 56-41 victory over host Bartram Trail in a 4-8A game.

Fleming Island, the winner of six straight games, improves to 15-1 on the season and remains undefeated 8-0 in District play. Bartram Trail falls to 11-8 on the year and 5-3 in the District.

The Golden Eagles last lost on December 22nd on a buzzer- beater at the hands of University Christian in a Holiday Tournament.

Fleming Island moved out to a 26-22 advantage at halftime with Astor (11 points) and Miles (15 points) accounted for all of the teams points.

“We got after them pretty good at halftime about picking up the defensive intensity,” said Chandler.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Bears 18-5 in the pivotal third period to grab a 44-27 lead. Astor, who was eight of 10 from the foul line for the game led his team with nine points including a 3-pointer and Miles added five points.

“Our defense wore them down in the third,” said Chandler. “We sped up the game and I think it tired them out.”

Bartram Trail , who was led by senior center Tim Plish’s 11 points, cut the Fleming Island lead 47-37 with 2:44 left in the game but senior guard Khalid Pogue drilled a dagger 3-pointer from the left wing and then scored on a beautiful back door layup off a feed from Astor to grab a 52-37 lead to ice the game.

“Khalid is our X Factor on offense,” said Chandler. “We need him to get him going on offense because he is another weapon to defend.”

The Golden Eagles will host county rival Clay on Friday, February 1st.
