FLEMING ISLAND – Popcorn started popping at shortly before 10:30 a.m., ahead of the first of 21 schedule showings of the 181-minute “Avengers: Endgame” at the Fleming Island 12 theater Friday.

Theater manager David Dawson said there were no plans to turn the popper off until nearly midnight.

The movie, scheduled to be the 22nd installment of the Marvel series, opened Thursday to an overwhelming response that allowed Dawson to preempt another movie to add a 21st show on opening night.

“The is one of the most-anticipated premiers I can remember,” Dawson said. “Episode 7 [“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”] was big. This is just as big. This one is unprecedented.

“And it definitely delivers.”

Much like the recipe of a secret barbecue sauce, Marvel fans have vowed not to give away the ending.

Seven of 12 theaters are dedicated to “Endgame,” Dawson said, but he will add shows “when I can” if there aren’t a lot of tickets sold to the other five movies.

All shows at night are sold out for days, Dawson said. In fact, many tickets were sold three months in advance.
