Barley & Pie leaves its pawprint on pizza, brewery scene

FLEMING ISLAND — Located at the former site of V Pizza, Barley and Pie opened during the dog days of summer to critical culinary acclaim.

Barley and Pie is a pizza and brewery combo that is becoming a cultural focal point in the community, similar to the former Brewer's Pizza in Orange Park.

The restaurant specializes in sourdough neo-Neapolitan pizza. Pepperoni Hot Honey and Bacon Mac & Cheese are popular pizzas on the menu. The restaurant also sells sides, salads and appetizers. Its tater tots are among the best in Clay County.

But it's the brewery and bar culture that has catapulted Barley and Pie to be Fleming Island's newest sensation. It's Always Raining in Fleming Island and 32003 are some of the highlights on the home-brewed beer menu.

One customer named Steve, a friend of owner Philip Maple, spoke highly of Fleming Island's newest pizza joint.

"Phil's doing his concept here. Great music. The patio is phenomenal. The service has been really good. Sharon, who's the culture, has been really good. They're expanding week by week by week. They're expanding their menus. I think they'll have a perfect vibe here," Steve said.

Sharon isn't a person — it's the endearing name given to the restaurant's sourdough yeast starter used to bake the pizza crust.

Steve said, "Phil's a hardworking guy" who is bringing his philosophy and the flavors of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Fleming Island.

The namesake Barley is taken from the owning family's beloved bull mastiff. In the spirit of canine admiration, Barley and Pie have a covered patio that welcomes friendly leashed dogs.

Live music is booked weekly on Thursday and Saturday. The restaurant has events planned as well. There is a comedy night this Friday, Aug. 23, at 9 p.m. and Oktoberfest from Sept. 27-29. To the anticipation of many, there will be a meet-and-greet with Barley on Dec. 7.
