The Clay County Sheriff’s Office honored Deputy Ben Zirbel Monday at 10:55 a.m., at the time and intersection of his crash one year ago. Sheriff Darryl Daniels, members of the agency and others who were close to Deputy Zirbel were present as Sergeant Donald Sutherland, who worked with him on the Traffic Unit, laid the wreath. Florida Highway Patrol, CCSO Public Service Aids, the CCSO Honor Guard and Clay County Fire Rescue were also present during the brief memorial. Zirbel also was honored on Wednesday, the anniversary of his death, with a wreath on display in front of sheriff headquarters in Green Cove Springs. Zirbel was on motorcycle patrol when a truck pulling a trailer turned in front of him on Blanding Boulevard. He lived two days after the collision and his organs were donated to patients.
