CLAY TODAY – The Clay Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works directly with educators and administration to improve public education in Clay County. Through innovative programming, grants, community partnerships, and events, we ensure that teachers and students have the resources they need to reach their full potential, today announced it has received a grant for $4,000 from the Florida Lottery.
Through the grant, the Clay Education Foundation will work alongside Clay County School District to expand its “Future Ready Clay” initiative, providing ninth-12th grade students and families one-to-one advising services throughout the year in the form of workshops, free ACT/SAT test prep, resume building, essay review, FAFSA completion events, and financial literacy events as they plan for success during and beyond high school.
“We believe that through this partnership with the school district we will be able to successfully equip students and their families with the self-awareness and responsibility skills needed to build a successful path after high school,” stated Makayla Buchanan, Executive Director at the Clay Education Foundation.
While college and career planning information is considered “readily available” by many, Clay County has a number of students that still do not know their 1) eligibility for Bright Futures Program, especially the Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship;
2) how to create a plan in high school to achieve their post-secondary and career goals;
3) when and how to complete their FAFSA; and 4) what college opportunities exist and are best for their goals. This program will not only help students and their families become aware of the relevant college and career planning information and eligibility for Bright Futures, but in addition, take actionable steps towards those post-secondary pathways.
This is the second year the Florida Lottery has awarded grants to local education foundations for projects that help students overcome barriers to earn a Bright Futures scholarship and encourage students of low socio-economic backgrounds to be prepared for postsecondary education. This year the Florida Lottery provided $40,000 to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations to fund standout projects that support students and families in understanding and taking the next steps to successful postsecondary education.
“At the Florida Lottery, enhancing education for students in our state is at the very heart of what we do,” said Florida Lottery Secretary John F. Davis. “We are proud to partner with the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations to give back and help students realize their dream of a brighter future.”
