SJR State starts medical assisting program;
Applications now available online

ORANGE PARK – St. Johns River State College will introduce a Medical Assisting career and technical certificate program this fall. The program will provide skills training in both administrative and clinical duties, including, but not limited to phlebotomy (drawing blood), electrocardiograph aide, taking vital signs, and medical billing and records. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of healthcare settings, such as acute care hospitals, outpatient settings, ambulatory care facilities, medical offices and clinics.
Applications will be available now through June 15.
The program length is three semesters (one year) with 1,300 hours of medical assisting courses. The inaugural class will begin in Palatka in August, with clinical experiences within and around the tri-county service areas of SJR State. The College anticipates rotating campuses in 2020, with an Orange Park campus class beginning in January.
Applications for the fall semester will be available online between May 1 and June 15.
The Orange Park campus will host information sessions for residents interested in the program on May 9 from 10-11 a.m. and from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in room H1112.
“We are excited to expand our program offerings in Allied Health to include a Medical Assisting program,” said Anna Lebesch, SJR State vice president for workforce development. “This is a wonderful opportunity that will be a lifetime career for some and a step in a longer pathway for others.
“Regardless, this field provides meaningful personal fulfillment and support to patients and our medical community.”
Program completers are eligible to continue on a pathway toward the SJR State nursing program or one of the allied health programs.
For additional information, visit www.SJRState.edu or call the Allied Health department at (904) 808-7465.
