Two SJCDS Spartans earn National Merit Scholarships

ORANGE PARK – St. Johns Country Day School is thrilled to congratulate two members of the class of 2020 who have been awarded National Merit Scholarships.
Valerie V. Cabrera, of Orange Park, earned the National Merit University of Florida Scholarship and the Benacquisto Scholarship; and Lindsey N. Sabo, of Fleming Island, earned the National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship.
Valerie and Lindsey will attend the University of Florida and Vanderbilt University, respectively.
Determined through the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955, these students have been selected for college-sponsored merit scholarships which are offered by the institutions the students plan to attend.
“I'm so proud of Lindsey and Valerie. They are both such bright, dedicated young women and everyone at St. Johns look forward to seeing their continued achievements in college and beyond,” said Acting Head of School Mary Virginia Fisher.
Of approximately 1.6 million high school students who enter the National Merit Scholarship competition each year, about 50,000 of the highest-achieving students qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Two-thirds (about 34,000) of those receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise, and the remaining – 16,000 are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists and continue in the competition.
About 15,000 advanced to become Finalists and are eligible for awards based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments.

Middleburg’s Hawkins makes Dean’s List at Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – Joseph Hawkins of Middleburg made the Spring 2020 Dean's List at Georgia Southwestern State University.
Hawkins was among 735 students recognized for scholastic achievement.
To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must earn a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and take a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Fleming Island’s Carwile on Dean's List at Belmont University

NASHVILLE – Jared Carwile of Fleming Island qualified for the Spring 2020 Dean's List at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.
Approximately 53% of Belmont's 6,313 undergraduate students qualified for the Spring 2020 Dean's List.
Belmont Provost Dr. Thomas Burns said, "This achievement for the spring semester indicates that these students have placed a high priority on their work at Belmont and have invested time and energy in their studies. It is our strong belief that consistent application in this manner will reap great benefits, which will equip them for a lifetime of learning and growing."
