HOWEY IN THE HILLS - Fleming Island High’s boys golf team got a career performance from Andrew Davis en route to a fifth place team finish at the Class 3A championship tournament held Friday and Saturday in Howey in the Hills.

Fleming Island added to their list of accomplishments for 2020 with the fifth place finish after a district title and a region runnerup finish to Spruce Creek.

From Middleburg High, sophomore Chase Carroll finished 35th in the Class 2A tournament. In Class 1A, the Keystone Heights High girls team, led by the senior duo of Camille Jackson and Sloane Seibert, get their shot at the state trophy, also at Howey in the Hills. Keystone Heights got an at-large bid to join the field after finishing fourth in region 1-1A.

In Class 3A, the Golden Eagles, fifth with a 615 stroke score for two 18-hole rounds (310, 305), stayed within earshot of champion Tallahassee Chiles; first with 594 (297, 297), and locked in the top five battle with Lake Mary 601 (310, 291), Winter Park 601 (297, 304), Vero Beach 605 (302, 303) and Spruce Creek all with 10 strokes of Chiles. Spruce Creek finished behind Fleming Island. Lake Mary’s second round of 291 was the best team 18 score, but not enough to catch Chiles’consistency with back to back 297 rounds.

At the region 1-3A tournament, Fleming Island finished ahead of Lake Mary and Chiles at the Fleming Island Golf Club with Spruce Creek just one stroke as the region champion.

Davis was steady as a rock with rounds one over par 73 and three over par 75 for the two day event.

Colton Swartz, who was top finisher for Fleming Island in a tie at regions with a three under 69 at Fleming Island Golf Club, had seven bogies in his first round to check in a six over 78, then rebounded to have a birdie and and two bogies in his first nine then a string of 11 pars to finish at one over 73. The rest of the Fleming Island team scored 157 for Jameson Adams (79, 78) with a double bogie in each round making things difficult; Charles Lonsdale 159 (80, 79); and Enrique Trabal 171 (87, 84).

For Carroll, in his second trip to Howey in the Hills, the course did not get any easier as overall champion Luke Clanton of team champion American Heritage (Plantation) scorched the second round with a seven under par 65 to best the field.

Carroll was unable to keep pace with rounds of 79 and 82 putting him at 161.

Carroll did surge in his first round with a eagle and birdie for the 14th and 15th holes, but a double bogie and a triple bogie in the first nine hampered his score to keep up with the leaders. In his second round, Carroll got just one birdie with five double bogies.
