Clay Today will test your knowledge weekly and provide interesting facts on various topics. As we salute the record-setting 40 gold medal efforts by the United States and China, why not focus on Olympic streaks? The U.S. women’s basketball team won a thrilling 67-66 gold medal game Sunday against France when France’s Gabby Williams’ foot was about two inches inside the 3-point arc when she hit a game-ending two-point jumper at the buzzer. That victory extended the U.S. women’s streak to eight consecutive gold medals – one more than the men’s record of seven in a row. As impressive as both are, they aren’t close to the top of the list. The United States has the record with 16 consecutive pole vault golds, starting in 1896 and ending in 1972, while Russia and its Unified Teams won 12 golds in a row in pairs skating in the Winter Games (1964 through 2010) and 10 women’s all-around gymnastics titles. The U.S. men’s 110-meter hurdles (1932 through 1972) and Kenya’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (1984 through 2916) teams each won nine consecutive golds, while the U.S. men’s 400-meter relay (1920 through 1956) and long jump (1924 through 1960) teams won eight competitions in a row.
