Clay Today will test your knowledge weekly and provide interesting facts on various topics. This week, new laws for 2025 in Florida. With the start of a new year comes new laws in the state. The most prominent that went into effect at the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1 was House Bill 3, which requires social media platforms, including online forums, websites that allow users to upload or view content of other viewers, use algorithms that analyze user data or curate content, has infinite scrolling, push notifications containing information about the user’s account, displays person interactive metrics such as “likes” and “reshares,” to block certain minors from creating new accounts. It also requires them to terminate certain accounts. Another change is the supervisor of elections must notify a voter if they don’t list a party affiliation, and affiliation can’t be changed without written consent. Also, it’s now a second-degree misdemeanor to “impede, threaten or harass a first responder if they are warned. The act is defined as “to willfully engage in a course of conduct directed at a first responder which intentionally causes substantial emotional distress in that first responder and serves no legitimate purpose.” Finally, another bill increases the penalties to defraud a “specified” adult – namely anyone 65 or older or someone who is “vulnerable.”
