In honor of Law Enforcement Appreciation Week, our focus is Clay County police history:
The county’s first sheriff was Elam J. Daniels in 1859; the Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated Billy Joe Crab’s escape (he crafted a "key" from a spoon) from the Old Jail, which was constructed in 1894 with 16 cells; the jail, which was open until 1972, remains the second-oldest of its kind standing in Florida; Sheriff Charles Wilson was killed in the line of duty in 1906; the county’s first officer killed on duty was Josephus Peeler; from 1894 to 1916, there were seven executions by hanging; an episode of Ghost Hunters was filmed at the county’s Old Jail.
