For this edition, we focus on Green Cove Springs’ annual RiverFest, which takes place Monday, May 26.
The Memorial Day RiverFest marks its 37th celebration to honor military veterans and simultaneously signal the unofficial start of summer; the event started in 1988 as Family Frolics; it attracts over 10,000 people each year and is the largest event the city of GCS organizes; RiverFest kicks off with military veterans and family members speaking about their sacrifices; Green Cove Springs-based Dreamland Squadron performs a flyover; there's also a laying of the wreath, ringing of the bell and Taps; historically speaking, according to the city’s website, Green Cove was home to a Naval training base during WWII and, after the war, housed a mothball fleet of 600 ships.
