Hurricane “season” officially begins June 1. Northeast Florida has experienced at least 26 hurricanes, according to Universal Property, including one Category 3 since the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale’s 1 to 5 rating system; the Saffir-Simpson process was developed in the early 1970s based on sustained maximum wind speed, with Category 1 referring to those least-damaging and Category 5 being most dangerous; Jacksonville hasn’t been directly impacted by a major one since the “Labor Day Hurricane” circa 1935; unlike central and western Florida, the northeast region wasn’t heavily affected by hurricanes Milton and Helene in 2024.
