ORANGE PARK – Clay High former swim state champion Caeleb Dressel, now a professional swimmer for the International Swim League’s Cali Condors, was named the undisputed Most Valuable Player for the 2020 ISL season.
Dressel, in an article by Barry Revzin at SwimSwam.com, earned 463.5 pionts in six competitions to earn an impressive $291,788 with $165,000 coming from being named MVP.
At a recent ISL meet in Hungary, Dressel set two new world records with a 20.16 split that beat his previous record of 20.24.
In the same meet, Dressel swam the 100 meter butterfly in 47.78 seconds to be the first swimmer ever under 48 seconds. The previous record was 48.08 by Olympic gold medalist Chad LeClos. LeClos was second in the record breaking race in 48.45.
Dressel, 24, and a 10-time NCAA champion for University of Florida, holds three world records after a third record; in the 100 meter individual medley in 49.28, earlier this season. The 100 meter individual medley is a rarely swum event with Dressel breaking the record previously held by Russia’s Vladimir Morozov in 2018 of 50.26 with a first-ever under 50 seconds 49.88 earlier this season.
Dressel was denied the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games; postponed to 2021 after winning seven gold medals at the 2017 World Championships.
The International Swimming League is a global, 10-team swimming league that holds men’s and women’s competitions over five regular season events and a semifinal and final.
One significant difference with international competition is that ISL events are held in 25 meter pools with extra turns. Olympic and international events are held in 50 meter pools.
Dressel, twice an Olympic gold medalist, is among a handful of Olympic stars competing in the ISL.
