FLEMING ISLAND – The Golden Eagles held the Fletcher High Senators to a single goal through the half break and the second half water break, but despite a solid defense for three-quarters of the game, Fletcher scored their second goal off the water break throw-in on their way to a 3-0 shutout of Fleming Island Thursday Fleming Island High School.
Fleming Island coach Michael Green noted that his Golden Eagles needed some momentum against Fletcher as the district and region championships loom in the next week.
“We needed a big win tonight because we’ll probably see them later” said Green. “All night, we just couldn’t get momentum going.”
Green’s statement was spot on as time and again, the Golden Eagles would loft the ball to midfield, get a pass in, and be broken apart by the seemingly hyperactive Senators.
“It looks like we are having trouble playing together, controlling the ball,” said Green. “We just couldn’t slow the game down.” Even when Fleming Island could get a ball near a corner to try and find a pass towards the net, Fletcher was all over the Golden Eagle Offense like ants on a sugar cube.
“They have to come together and do it for the guy next to them. Until they do that, they’re not going to win.”
Green’s comment was evident as the Golden Eagles would get a man inbound, look around and not have an outlet pass to move to. All night, Fletcher’s swam would attack and the ball was right back in the Fleming Island Defensive end.
If the Golden Eagles want to move anywhere in post-season, that effort needs to start now and happen quickly.
