East softball All Stars fall in final

OAKLEAF – In the inaugural North Florida All Star Series Softball Classic held at Oakleaf High School, area high school softball players got one final chance to match up with some of the best competition statewide.

Coached by Oakleaf High’s Christina Thompson with assistants Casey Thompson of Ridgeview and Clay High’s Matt Lewis, the East team, with Oakleaf’s pitching duo of Madisyn Davis and Cambria Arturo, won the first game of the hopefully annual event, a 3-1 win over the South team, coached by Bartram Trail’s Jen West with Creekside’s Neil Lucano and Mandarin’s Natalia Gonzalez.

Davis opened on the mound for the East team and delivered a stellar final high school campaign with no runs, five strikeouts and just one significant hit; a double to Bartram Trail’s Olivia Creamer in the first inning that got pushed to third base off groundballs. Davis got a flyball to St. Johns Country Day School’s Brianna Enter in left field to end the threat.

Creamer answered with her own strong mound presence for coach West as the two stalwarts ended three innings at 0-0 with East’s Sydney Lewis walking in the third as the East first baserunner. Ironically, Davis did drive one fly ball to deep centerfield, but the catch was made by Mandarin’s Serena Hernandez at the fence.

In the bottom of the third, it was Fernandina Beach’s Shelbea Holland who tagged an Arturo pitch for a homer over the left field fence that got the first run of the steamy morning. Arturo locked down two strikeouts to squelch a big inning.

A left field blooper from Middleburg High’s Kiersten Sanchez got the East team on base with Arturo hitting her own blooper and Jasmine Lamug getting a third dropped in the outfield to put a run on the scoreboard.

Arturo notched two more strikeouts in the ensuing inning to set up another scoring inning for her East team behind a golf-swing single from Oakleaf ‘s Baylee Goddard and a Maddie Wilkes (SJCDS) double to score the game 2-1.

Another centerfield blast by Davis got Wilkes space to tag up and get to third where an errant throw kept Wilkes moving to a 3-1 score.

Enter entered to close the game on the mound and responded with two Ks and a grounder.

In the sixth, Lewis walked again in front of a single by Oakleaf’s Caitlynn Lamug single with both runners moving one more base before the inning ended.

In the championship game against the South team which featured players from the Santa Fe, Belleview, Buchholz and Lake Weir area, the South team got strong pitching from Kayla Betts of Eustis, a St. Leo College signee, who struck out five and walked one with just one hit in four innings as South won 4-1 over East.

East’s lone run was from Lewis who singled and scored in the seventh off a Olivia Wilber of Middleburg hit.
