GREEN COVE SPRINGS – St. Johns River State College nursing student Alexandra Wheeler administers a COVID-19 vaccine to residents at the Clay County Extension Office in Green Cove Springs. It is the nursing program’s first clinical experience with the Clay County Health Department. The immunization training was recently added to the nursing clinicals and assists in educating nursing students on the health department’s role within the community. Only 30% of nurses actually work in a hospital setting. Nurses working in public health focus on population health and are a vital part of any emergency response team.
