CLAY COUNTY – Regardless of who you support, last week’s vice-presidential debate was far better received than the first presidential debate.

The vice-presidential debate was significantly calmer and more collected, due in part to less resilience between Sen. Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence, compared to President Donald Trump and candidate Joe Biden.

The vice-presidential candidates were also seated as opposed to standing up and they did a better job following debate rules. We asked Clay Today readers about the debate for the Facebook Question of the Week and they mostly were fans of Pence.

“Vice President had an excellent debate,” resident Donna Heise said. “The moderator was slanted to Harris.”

Beverly Valliere agreed and said Pence spoke “truth and facts” and that Harris spoke “lies.” John Burdick said, “Pence cleaned her clock.” Clay County is made up of mostly Republican and the responses to the Facebook question lined up with that. Nobody responded to support Harris’ performance.

“Vice President Pence was outstanding,” Sue Ferris said. “It was hard to watch Harris’ facial expressions [and] inappropriate laughs while listening to her propaganda and lies.”

Cynthia Ruh had a similar problem with Harris, saying she was distracted by the senator’s eye rolling and sighing. In terms of the moderator, nobody that responded was particularly happy with her or her questions, but they agreed the moderator, Susan Page, did better than presidential moderator Chris Wallace.

“Need better moderators...no scripted questions, but was better than presidential debate by far,” Eric Newcom said.

Holly Jordan said the majority of the questions asked weren’t what American people want to know, and the question pulled from the eighth grader at the end of the debate was the best question of the night. Jordan also said she wasn’t a fan of the moderator.

“[Harris] did herself no favors,” Chris Reeder, a Clay Today reader that watched afar from the United Kingdom said. “[Pence] held court very well. Watching it from the UK, one could see this debate had more decorum.”

Reeder also pondered if audiences were watching a candidate that would someday be the 47th president, alluding to potential ambitions of Harris or Pence to run for the office in the future.
